Creative Ways to Drum for Stress Relief
Ever have one of those days when your mind just won’t quiet down?
Maybe you’re juggling work, family, and a million to-dos, and you can feel the stress building- especially with the holidays right around the corner! I’ve definitely been there! Years ago, when anxiety and overwhelm started creeping in, I discovered a simple but powerful tool: drumming. And no, you don’t need to be a musician—or even own a drum or a drum set—to feel the benefits!
How drumming became my stress-buster
At first, I just needed an outlet—something to get out of my head and into my body. What surprised me was how quickly a few minutes of drumming could shift my mood, calm my nerves, and help me focus. Over the years, I’ve shared these techniques with clients of all ages—from kids struggling with anxiety to adults dealing with burnout. The results? More calm, more clarity, and a lot more joy.
Ready to try it? Here are some creative ways to use drumming for stress relief:
- Desk Drumming: No drum? No problem! Tap gentle rhythms on your desk or lap. Even a few minutes can help release tension and reset your brain.
- Breath & Beats: Pair slow, deep breaths with a steady beat—inhale for four counts, exhale for four, and drum along. This helps regulate your nervous system and brings your focus back to the present.
- Music Breaks: Put on your favorite upbeat song and drum along with your hands, a pen, or even a book. Let yourself get lost in the rhythm and notice how your energy shifts.
- Family Rhythm Time: Invite your kids or partner to join in for a quick rhythm circle. It’s a fun way to connect, laugh, and let go of stress together.
- Gratitude Grooves: As you drum, think of one thing you’re grateful for with each beat. It’s a simple way to shift your mindset from stress to appreciation. I generally thank God as well.
Why does this work? Drumming activates both sides of the brain so you can focus, helps regulate breathing and your central nervous system, and gives your body a physical outlet for pent-up stress. It’s also a great way to “be in the moment” and take time to connect with your body, your emotions, and to God. No drumming experience needed! It’s just easy beats!
