Faith, Fear, and Finding Your Rhythm
Is fear overriding your faith? If so, you may need some help finding your rhythm. I know I did lately. The “Dori, it’s time to file for Medicare” reminders from the insurance agencies were really getting to me and I felt a wash of both sadness and regret. I can’t believe I’m old enough for Medicare! How did this happen?!
I asked myself “Have I done enough with my business and my life? Am I prepared enough for whatever retirement is going to look like?” There are other financial stressors as well. Most people have no idea how much it costs to run a business – even if you work mostly from home.
And then I remembered, I have to practice what I preach. I sat and I drummed and I talked to God. Drumming brings me (and many others) pure joy and loads of clarity! It put everything in perspective. It reset my mindset and my personal rhythm.
Finding your “rhythm”
Some things you just need to give over to God. And you need to drum. Yes, even if you aren’t an experienced drummer and even if you don’t own a drum, you need to tap out some beats.
This lowers your blood pressure, helps you relax and release, and it can also bring you great clarity. You can drum on your legs, your desk, a book, or whatever you have handy.
You see, you can’t think of anything else while you’re drumming. That helps clear the mental clutter. Step away from your laptop and your tablet or phone and just sit, tap out some beats, take some deep breaths, and listen.
Need an illustration and some encouragement?
Here’s a quick video to give you some ideas. Again, it’s not a drum lesson! The goal is not to teach you how to do complicated beats! It’s to show you how to use drumming as a health and wellness tool.
Age is just a number!
As for me, I’m not ready to fully retire. I will be switching things up but I’m not ready to call it quits. I don’t feel my age – no matter what those Medicare folks say! Remember, you’re never too old and it’s never too late…to rock what you’ve got! Heck, I wrote a book about it!
