Giving Birth to Your Dreams
Do you have a dream on your heart? Maybe it’s a book you want to write, a new business, a change in your business or career, or a big goal you set but haven’t hit yet.
As I write this, our daughter-in-law is having real labor pains. Grandbaby #3 is on the way any time now. Giving birth to a book, a business, or a career is almost as painful. The waiting part is no fun either. So let me put on my coaching hat for a minute and ask you a few questions.
What would you do if….?
Most people I’ve worked with know they’re stuck or not advancing as fast as they’d like but they don’t know why. If this is you, ask yourself:
1) What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
2) What would you do if you only had a year to live?
3) What would you do if you won a million dollars in the lottery?
The answers may be a bit different. For example, most people give a vague answer to #1. Most don’t think of work items for question #2. They usually respond with “travel” or “spend more time with family.” Question #3 really lets them dream big and they tend to add more details. It’s kind of like that funny song, If I Had a Million Dollars by the band, Barenaked Ladies. Ok, so you probably won’t win the lottery or buy a monkey but the question does make you dream bigger.
Defining your mission and your vision
A great way to gain clarity about your dreams and stay on track is to write (or type) out your current mission and your long-term vision. What’s the difference between the two? Your mission statement is like your elevator pitch. It’s what you provide for people right now. Your vision is much bigger and long-range. Both state what you do but not necessarily how. That comes later.
My mission: I help kids and adults focus, feel better, find their joy, and move forward FAST so they can rock the next stage of their lives!
My vision: I’d like to create a global movement that encourages, empowers, and equips creative teens and women to break free what’s holding them back so they can find their rhythm and rock the next stage of their lives.
Notice that I never mentioned the word drumming. Know why? Because what I do is much more than that. My personalized programs are really comprised of 4 parts: mentoring, motivation, ministry, and music (in the form of therapeutic drumming). Drumming is great but I’ve found that the combination of services are much more effective for those with specific goals or who really need a deep dive to get unstuck.
