Passion vs. Perfection: What’s More Important?
What’s more important? Passion or perfection? In drumming, as in life, I think passion needs to come first. Passion drives interest, which drives experience and expertise. It’s hard to feel fulfilled in a business, career, or endeavor if you’re not passionate about it.
When you love what you do
I spoke to a group of middle schoolers recently at a Career Day. I mentioned how working in international banking in New York City may sound cool but it sucked the life out of me. It wasn’t a good fit. Drumming comes naturally for me and it’s way more fun. I may not be perfect at it (as the trolls on Instagram and YouTube are quick to point out!) but it brings me joy.
When you love what you do, it shows. It oozes out of you and becomes contagious. People who have seen photos of my classes and events or who have attended them often comment on the joy that is on my face and the participants as well.
When good is good enough
So, if you’re holding back from doing something for fear that it isn’t perfect, hear this: Good is good enough. You have to take that first step and put yourself out there. Nothing is ever totally perfect.
My books aren’t perfect. My videos aren’t perfect. My newsletters sometimes have typos. But hey! I put the thing out there!
If you’re holding back, suffering from procrastination, or perfectionism, ask yourself what’s underneath all that? Often, it’s fear. Sometimes, it’s because someone somewhere discouraged you. As a result, you don’t feel worthy or “good enough.”
Good news
What are some things you can do to reframe things?
1. Keep things in perspective: Most people won’t notice little mistakes or if you flubbed a line or a note. It’s not the end of the world.
2. Take a breath: Don’t let the trolls get to you! They cannot determine your worth. I usually just delete the comment and move on. God knows my heart, my story, and my worth. They don’t.
3. Drum it out! Yes, my form of drum therapy really helps people reframe things and break free from what’s holding them back so they can rise up and rock the Next Stage of their business, career, ministry, or life. It’s way more than drumming! I mentor and minister to people to help them heal and move forward.
Now is not the time to shrink back and play small. Now is the time to Rise Up & Rock! Haven’t you waited long enough? Book your free call and let’s chat! There’s no obligation whatsoever.
