The Power of Good Vibrations
Could you use some positivity? I think we all could. This year will go down in the history books for sure. Some may consider it “The Year of Fear.” Others, like me, see it as “The Year of Change.”
Ripple Effect
Many know me as “Dori the Drum Chick.” But what many don’t know that I often work behind the scenes with different organizations and causes. All of those organizations are very diverse. So is the music community. Music brings people together. If they need me and my drums, I’m there. It might be to help at-risk women and kids or to help empower women and youth of color to help them rise up or start or grow their businesses.
Yes, I get some funny looks and some chuckles. I’m a white chick who carries around African drums and also plays bongos and conga drums. It’s a great conversation starter for how you can’t judge a book by its cover. No one expects that a white woman in her 60’s is going to have rhythm and can bust out some cool beats on the fly. My musical abilities have helped open the door to interesting conversations and collaborations.
I also know that there is some amazing science behind music. Studies have proven that music, and especially drumming, can not only calm your brain waves but it can positively change the cells of your body and also boost your immune system. Talk about good vibrations!
The winds of change are upon us, my friends. We are all going to have to adapt and help each other. It’s the only way to move forward. It can also create a ripple effect. So what can you do?
1) Start small. Start with a small way to reach out and bless others.
2) Expand your horizons. Try different groups, activities, and organizations that will bring a little diversity to your life.
3) Listen more. Talk less. Don’t feel the need to jump in and add your 2 cents. This is really hard for those of us who are extroverts but it can be done.
4) Find your rhythm. Just like with drumming, you can slow down your beat if you’re getting overwhelmed. Take some time to unplug from the news and social media. Connect with God and nature. Take a breath, take a break, tap out some beats.
Here’s this week’s quick video to help you get started. It includes drumming and some tips. Enjoy! What will you do to share some good vibrations? Feel free to comment below!
