Different, Not Defective
A different take on neurodiversity
Ever feel like you (or your child) just don’t fit the mold? Maybe you’re bouncing between labels—ADHD, autism, anxiety, or something else entirely. The search for answers can feel overwhelming, especially when every day is a different rhythm.
As someone who is neurodiverse and who’s worked with all kinds of neurodiverse folks—kids, teens, and adults—I know that the right support isn’t always about a label. It’s about finding what actually works to help you focus, feel better, and move forward. For many, that “something” is rhythm. And yes, there’s real science behind it!
What’s Really Going On?
Before accepting a label for yourself or your child, know that symptoms don’t always tell the full story. ADHD, autism, anxiety, sensory processing, and even giftedness can look similar on the surface. You might see:
- Restlessness or trouble sitting still
- Difficulty focusing, but hyper-focusing on favorite activities
- Big emotions—sometimes out of the blue
- Sensitivity to sounds, lights, or textures
- Feeling “different” but not sure why
- High levels of creativity and often IQ
- Ability to see things that others miss – often instantly
If this sounds familiar, know that you’re not alone—and you’re not weird or broken. In fact, in 1998, I discovered that the characteristics of ADHD and giftedness were exactly the same! There is often giftedness in those with autism as well. More people need to talk about this!! Different does NOT mean defective!
What can really help are tools that match your unique brain and body. That’s where drumming comes in! Yes, drumming – especially drum therapy®.

Drumming: More Than Just a Beat
Did you know there are dozens of studies showing how drumming can help with focus, self-regulation, and stress? I went through 10 recent studies and found three that really stood out:
- Drumming Improves Attention in ADHD: A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that just 30 minutes of group drumming significantly improved attention and reduced impulsivity in children with ADHD. The rhythm gave their brains something steady to “tune into.”
- Reduces Anxiety & Sensory Overload: Research from the University of Toronto (2025) showed that rhythmic drumming helped kids on the autism spectrum lower their anxiety and handle sensory overload, especially in group settings.
- Boosts Mood & Social Connection: A 2023 review in Music Therapy Perspectives highlighted how drum therapy builds confidence, encourages social interaction, and even increases “feel good” endorphins—for neurodiverse and neurotypical people alike.
